For work, I recently had to expand a system disk for a VMware VM.  Of course, the conventional wisdom is that you cannot expand the system disk.  But did I let something like common sense stop me?  No!

Basically, I converted the VM.  The VMware converter allows you to P2V (physical to virtual) and V2V (virtual to virtual) computer systems (mostly servers).  But, one option allows you to convert one machine between ESX hosts.  During the conversion process, you can state how large you want the disk to be.  Once at that point, you can expand the size of the disk.  Afterwards you can run the vm with the completely expanded disk.  I'll post a more detailed walkthrough later.

This past Monday, I gave a presentation at the monthly St. Louis DNN User Group meeting on the basics of  integrating ASP.Net AJAX in DotNetNuke Module Development.  I thought it was a decent presentation, but hey, I am a little partial.  Here's a the sample project I used.  It includes building a dynamic data dropdownlist and communication between two modules.  Feel free to download it and play around.  If you have any questions, please feel free to drop me a line.

Well, I am supposed to give a presentation on DotNetNuke and Ajax integration for the St. Louis DNN User Group meeting in a few weeks.  I could really use a suggestion on a sample project.  Any ideas or comments will be most welcome!

Also, Twitter is offering a nice little service where you can integrate your feed into your own web site.  It's probably pretty apparent, but I added this service to the home page so I don't have to mess with the XSL.  Thanks Twitter!

OpenForce is back!  I went to it last year and thought it highly useful and worthwhile.  It's still in the planning phases, but it'll be during Nov. 10 - 13 at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Vegas.  If you use DotNetNuke or are even thinking about it, I suggest you go.  I'll post more details as I find them.

I am constantly amazed at the growth and awareness of all things being generated online.  Speaking from personal experience (and only from personal experience), I am simply astounded at the number of people interacting on the web, all striving (in some way) to better their understanding of the world.

Mainly, it just kills me when someone I do not know starts following my twitter feed (http://twitter.com/n3bu1a).  Mainly, I use twitter to make sure my family can keep in touch with me better, and to bounce ideas of others that I follow.  To think that others out there are doing the same and (to whatever extent) that they feel I'm interesting enough to follow is, needless to say, amazing.

So anyway, jump on the twitter bandwagon.  You never know who's going to find you interesting enough to follow.

First and foremost, I do not proclaim to be a VMware, ESX or networking guru .  So the information that is forthcoming is really just for people beginning to learn what it's all about, etc.

That said, I just finished building a new ESX host, and for the last two days I could not get it to communicate on the network.  As it turns out, it's directly related to the VLAN, which is labeled optional.  Well, after two days of not knowing it was related to the VLAN, I called a friend of mine at Server-Centric, a virtualization agnostic firm based out of St. Louis.  As it turns out, when you specify what VLAN the esx host is on, the virtual switch will automatically tag it as such.  If the switch port that the ESX host is plugged into already sets the VLAN, then the ESX host doesn't know how to communicate to the world.  Simply leave the field blank, and it will begin to communicate.

So when do you wantot set the VLAN?  Only set the VLAN of a virtual switch when the switch port plugged into is a trunk port. ...
